The Nelson Trust ‘Making Change Happen’ Garden
This garden showcases the charity’s dedication to helping women facing addiction, mental health challenges and other complex needs which so often results in women being swept up in the criminal justice system.
A biophilic design informed by the unique requirements of a prison setting which is effectively both a public and private space. Through the beautiful, textured planting and adventurous hard landscaping, three key themes of hope, resilience and renewal pervade, highlighting the transformative, uplifting power of nature: a symbol not only of belief and inspiration but also a call to action for a compassionate, inclusive society.
It will transform a sterile setting by bringing nature within using harmonising, uplifting planting, combining movement and stillness. A sculptural focal point with transparency allows the visitor to be transported to an imaginary place whilst retaining sight lines.
Following the show, the garden will be relocated to HMP Eastwood Park. This will open up new pathways for women to maintain the garden, learn new skills, gain respite and recover from their experiences. It’s an emblem of hope.
